Saying Thank You

July 4, 2015

Meet my little love heart cowl:

Some of you will doubtless recognise the stitch pattern I've used here – it's one of the 3 sections used in the Purl Bee's pattern for the Stitch Block Cowl, a piece I've made to commission several times now.  The wool I've used is a big favourite of mine for cowls: Malabrigo's Worsted Merino, a super soft kettle dyed pure merino wool from Uruguay.  The colours I've used are Natural and Gerano and the cowl is about 22 inches in diameter, just the right size to slip over your head and arrange in a variety of ways, depending on your mood.

As you can see, the stitch pattern is pretty on both sides and I've made it quite wide/tall at 20cm /8 inches so that you can fold it over if you want, right side out:

Or wrong side out:

Or both sides out!

Knitting cutesy love hearts isn't usually my thing and, as anyone who knows me in person will tell you, I'm quite reserved when it comes to sharing my emotions. I've told people before that this has to do with growing up in Yorkshire amongst all that grit, but regardless of the environment I developed in, I think it's my personality anyway. So having established that I'm not likely to be gushing or in the least bit phoney when I say this, I want to say a great big thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged me in my crimson rabbit adventure over the last couple of years.

Last month, I reached a goal in my Etsy shop when my 'number of sales' tipped over 100 and whilst it took a while to get there, it felt amazing.  As anyone who has sold on Etsy will tell you, unless you're already an established presence online, or have a product that everyone wants, or you just happen to get lucky, it's hard to get started.  For one thing, how to succeed on Etsy isn't obvious and there are various dead ends that you will find yourself wasting time on and becoming demotivated by.  I haven't discovered any magic path to success there, I've just got on with running my shop as professionally as I know how and continuing to use Etsy as a buyer by favouriting and following and treasury list making – which I love doing anyway, when the mood strikes me.

Facebook has also been great for me in several ways, not least of which is actually developing my own personality as a creative person.  That might sound a bit arty farty, but in the effort to fit in and succeed in the corporate world during my many years there, I had molded myself into someone else and it took a while to decompress and get back to who I am.  The other fab thing about Facebook is being able to socialise online with people you like, whether you're following their page, they're following your page or, more commonly, both!  Ironically, I never used my personal Facebook page and I still don't very much – I just don't feel the need, but mixing with the handmade community (makers and supporters) on there has been so important for me, especially working in the rather isolated way that most of us do, day to day.

Anyway, enough of this sharing and gushing, the point is – thank you, whoever you are – if you're readying this, you're supporting me and my endeavours at making a living doing what I love and I appreciate it, massively.  I'm still quite a way from actually making a living at this, but thanks to you, I keep inching closer to it.

And coming to the main point of this post, I would particularly like to thank those people who have spent their hard earned cash on buying something from me – whether it was the old friends who bought something from me in the early days or the new friends I've made on line over the last few years, or anyone else out there who saw something I made and wanted one for themselves or a loved one, for whatever reason.  If you've ever bought something from me, and you like this love heart cowl, please leave a comment on this post and I'll enter you into a draw to win it.  I'd love to make you all one but, well, that's just not practical, is it? 😉

I'll put the names of all commentors into a hat on Friday 10th July and announce the winner here after that and by Saturday noon, at the latest.  Good luck! 😀

Well, you know me Debbie …. I'm not really *that* keen on cowls but I suppose it would be churlish of me not to join in!

Seriously though, congratulations on being fabulous and selling an awful lot on Etsy. You know how much I love your work and value your opinion on mine.  Facebook would be a much duller place without your dress up box xxx

I loved reading this, thank you for sharing. It's been a very difficult few months in our little household and I am feeling a little done in by it all. I ordered 2 of your beautiful makes and they arrived safely this week. Truth be told I had buyers remorse after ordering as I really shouldn't be spending ££ at the moment on such beautiful but (some would say) 'non – essential' things. That says I haven't even opened the parcel yet and I am so very glad I did order! This really lifted my spirits which were at a particularly low ebb when the postman came knocking. And I got to thinking how 'feeding your emotions' is just as vital as feeding yourself and your children. I will open that parcel as a little reward to myself once I have tackled some difficult tasks, one item is a gift for a friend, so will be sharing the joy! Sorry this reply has gone a little 'US Self help' but I really want to say thank you for making beautiful things that provoke an immediate emotional reaction, because they are beautiful (and useful) and thank you for such amazing service in making, posting and sending me a message all so promptly – no buyers remorse here! ❤️

So sorry to hear you're having a bad time at the moment Cindy – you're so right that sometimes you have to just do something for yourself as a little pick me up.  Here's hoping that you get those difficult tasks out of the way soon – do be kind to yourself and take care heart

My auntie loves her scarf and I love it how you presented everything! It was a treat to open it and then give it to her. not only are you so creative and precise, you're also one of the nicest people that I haven't actually met in real life! And I'm not saying that because of this give away regardless of all that, I think it is an amazing thing to have reached these 100 sales, etsy is a hard place. Pretty much what I want to focus on when Fleur is in school in a year's time! Looking forward to seeing all your future makes x

Just wanted to say hi! I’m stopping by as a recommendation from Little Doolally! I appreciated reading this post, I too have had a rough start on Etsy and hope to get it back going again soon. I’m still a beginner in this designing/making/selling world and hope to find my own nitch somewhere. I’ve never worn or owned a cowl, but my little family is moving up to the northeast (Virginia) from Florida over here in the US in a month, and I’m sure I could use one like this there!

Hi Debbie, please pop my name in t'hat – I love this little cowl and as I live in Yorkshire it probably means that I can wear it in the summer months too. It goes without saying that I love everything you've made for me, my all time favourite is the zippy pouch with my little bear embroidered on the front – even my eyes misted up a bit when I opened the parcel!!! Well done for achieving your 100th sale on Etsy too. xxx

Congratulations on your 100th sale..how wonderful.

I adore your page and seeing all your beautiful things and that attention to detail that you put in to everything you make.It brightens up my day with your postings from the dress up box and the stunning dresses that I wish I was wearing every day.

My daughters nursery has been blessed with lots of beautiful things you have made for her…everyone takes pride of place in there and always receives lots of compliments from everybody who sees them.

Sadly I am not lucky enough to own one of your pieces….would love to win this gorgeous cowl.My partner bought me a lovely cream coloured cashmere jumper and it would look fabulous with that..haha.Fingers and toes crossed.

So it just leaves me to thank you really…when you were making things for Darcey all your communication with me was second to none…updating me with your progress and involving me with all the fabric choices and sending me lots of images of the progress of my items…just wonderful…not forgetting how beautifully wrapped they are when the postman delivers them…the perfect gift.

Here is to your next 100 makes

Love, love , love your work!! Don't actually own any yet but planning to. Also very much enjoy your blog, and pins of the day. One very talented lady. Would love to be able to produce items as beautiful as yours, but sadly my knitting skills are limited and when I try my husband asks if I'm stretching wool again!!!….   I end up unravelling so much!

    • Reply crimson July 11, 2015 at 8:51 am

LOL!  Thanks so much Lindsey 😀  If you can do the knit stitch, you can make this cowl if you want to – see the notes on my Ravelry project page and if you decide to give it a go and get stuck, give me a shout x
